Moving is never easy. I know that better than anyone, this is my fifth move in the past year! This year I have found myself in between Michigan, Notre Dame, London and New York. My most recent move has been the most interesting. Moving to New York from England is such a weird experience. NYC and London are so similar but so different at the same time. I wanted to make this blog post for anyone going through the same thing. Whether you are British or American, if you have lived between the two cities you will know the general confusion that happens during the move. Here are a few of my confusions that occurred during my move from England to New York.

Better Food
London has so many options for food, but NYC definitely wins the award for the best food between the two. This is just my opinion but many people I have met seem to agree. What’s better than New York’s pizza and bagels!! A lot of British people I have met have told me so many great things about their experiences with NYC food. In London, I was so nostalgic for American food and missed it so much! There are varied opinions on this topic, but I couldn’t have been happier to be back in New York mainly for the food. London needs more salads and veggie burgers!!
Worse Transportation
This is where London is definitely the winner. New York’s MTA has a long way to go and could use a lot of work. There are a lot of delays and it needs to work on its cleanliness factor. I was blown away by the efficiency of London’s tube system after spending so much time in New York. I never experience delays, every train was right on time! And so clean!! The benefits of New York’s transportation is that it is much more affordable. When moving to New York from England you can look forward to a better price but expect to add more travel time in case of delays.
Modernity Everywhere
London is so rich with history and the architecture is so classic. However, in New York there is much less of that. The majority of the famous buildings will have been made in the 20th or 21st century. There is a lot less history in the buildings but the futuristic designs are so eye-catching. Some prefer New York for that reason while others prefer historic London. It is hard to decide which is best but I really think the two cities are just special in their own way.
American Accents and Slang
Honestly, I am going to need some help with this one. It is still hard for me to decipher which phrases are said in the US but not London. If anyone knows, please tell me in the comments! One big difference is that if you are asking to use the “toilet” in New York the phrases bathroom or restroom will go over much better. When moving to New York from England there will definitely be a change in your vocabulary.
