The following phrase sat in my notes for weeks…
This month marks my 4 year anniversary as a blogger.
That was all I had to say for so long, but this annual blog post is my favorite place to step back and reflect on this platform and my experiences over the years.
It never fails to surprise me that I have been able to keep up this site alive and constantly evolving at all times. Although the time has passed my memory still serves me a clear recollection of how this all came to be.
I entered the class of “first years” at Notre Dame with the dream of becoming a broadcast journalist but quickly learned that this was not the career path for me. This most likely had to do with the fact that I had just moved out of my parent’s house meaning I could finally do whatever I wanted!
Step 1:
Download Instagram.
My favorite thing about my new favorite app was the ability to gawk at the style of my favorite bloggers. When I wasn’t in class or running around campus wrecking havoc that’s what you could find me doing.
At the time, Chiara Ferragni was my personal favorite. She was an intellect, businesswoman and fashion blogger: everything I wanted to be! She sat front row at fashion week, traveled the world and documented it all on her smartphone.
Within the first few months of college, I had discovered my newfound career path, I had nailed it down. I was going to work at Hearst Tower and become the Editor-in-Chief of Harper’s Bazaar.
I told everyone in my class. “Vogue just isn’t for me,” I sighed.
They rolled their eyes, laughed with me and returned to their
finance internship applications.
At the time, a family tradition over the holidays was to travel to my beach house in Jupiter, Florida. This became the birthplace of Style in the Way. When there, I woke up every morning at the crack of dawn and walked a mile or two down the beach (it was dog friendly so I couldn’t resist). I decided I didn’t have to wait a second longer to begin my relationship with the fashion industry.
I had been waiting with hopes on an internship in the summer but while still being at school I could thrive on the energy that writing into my own platform for industry information and lookbooks was a possibility.
I spent that night working on my 2016 New Year’s Resolution: to start a fashion blog. I texted all of my friends (many of which were boys without a clue about fashion) asking them what I should name my blog. They sent several hilarious options but none of them quite suited me.
I thought of my passion to create music. I played piano since I was 4 years old and taught myself guitar in high school. This is how I came up with the name Style in the Way. Named after a song by one of my favorite bands.
Something in the Way by Nirvana.
Telling this story provides a feeling of great nostalgia because I have completed so many of the goals I created when starting this passion project of mine. I am working at Bazaar, have attended several fashion weeks, and live in NYC.
I am currently searching every corner of this crazy city for my next set of dreams and goals. While I’m not quite set on one yet, they all involve taking over the world and being the boss.
See you at the top!
