Let’s Make Tie-Dye More Than Just A Summer Fling

It is mid-summer in New York City and the sweltering heat already has me already dreaming of fall. The song “Summer in the City” has been in my head lately because it so accurately describes NYC in July. One of my signature accomplices for this insane weather has been my go-to tie-dye t-shirt. I have had to become a certified outfit repeater to withstand this heat. It has been a perfect pop of color for me and it’s only $35! I have worn it with just denim, a matching hot-pink skirt, and even a white linen pantsuit. This was a good introduction into this trending print but I am wanting more. That is why I am campaigning to make tie-dye more than just a summer fling. Tie-dye for fall is what I am currently dreaming of.

To make this work for fall, I love the idea of layering a Dannijo or Retro Fete slip dress with a turtleneck. Proenza Schouler is also devoted to the tie-dye trend immensely. I attended the Collina Strada show last fashion week and really loved how she has been using tie-dye, and the brand has a great price point. Topshop has a lot of unique and interesting ways to wear tie-dye so if you are looking to spend less, I would check them out. Or you can always DIY your tie-dye for fall items to get the look for less.

So you are probably wondering how people pull off this trend during the fall. Tie-dye just screams summer of love so it is hard to imagine ways to interpret this for cooler weather. I think the first step is to take note of deeper tones. I love my pink tie-dye shirt but for fall, I might look for berry and deep green shades. During fashion week, since it was winter yet people were dressing for summer trends, I noticed a lot of people doing this and it definitely inspired me to continue this one into the fall. There is also a lot of opportunities to wear oversized items in order to make tie-dye for fall happen. The trend is built for comfort and adaptability so you can always let that take the lead in the rest of your outfit by choosing an oversized hoodie and dad jeans. Tie-dye is also a great opportunity to mix prints. It almost feels like a neutral at that point so seeing it with everything including stripes, gingham, and plaid. I loved matching mine with bright prints to draw attention to the beautiful hues:

My Tie-Dye Inspiration

I have taken a lot of inspiration from different people and images I have seen on Instagram and wanted to compile some of my favorites and share with you some of my favorites.

Mixing Prints

This sweater is from Zoe Jordan and I love how the cut-out makes it more unique.

Not So Short Shorts

The Bermuda short trend is so cool and really takes me back to when I was an awkward middle-schooler. This hoodie is a great transitional piece for summer.

Simplicity

Another shot of mixing prints but this one features the logo of a Dior Saddle Bag. I love this take on tie-dye with a sheer mesh long sleeve that can work in your closet year-round. This one is from MSGM but I also am loving this ASOS option.

Slightly Camp

I love this utility take on tie-dye that goes a step further than the basic approach. Xenia Adonts wears a full Stella McCartney jumpsuit during fashion week. If you are looking to fully send this trend I would definitely recommend giving this look a try. It is a one-stop shop for a super chic outfit and I love how she paired it with this white bag.

An Ode To The 80s

This feels like a true DIY tie-dye moment. I love how this is the perfect juxtaposition of glam casual and I just love the perfect symmetry of the dye. One of the biggest trends for fall is ’80s prom which has been done really well by The Attico and Area. This is a great way to combine two different megatrends.

A Permanent Vacation

The best way to beat a summer heatwave is a good tank top. Balancing out your bare skin on top with a long skirt helps you look more sophisticated while staying cool in this weather. I really love the mixed prints in this outfit.

Tie-Dye Dad Shirt

This Prada look is the pinnacle of the Dad fashion trend. The oversized golf shirt finds it’s the connection to the vibe of 2019 with a touch of tie-dye.

Strictly Business

A tie-dye slip dress is always a dream and I have been loving this Dannijo option lately. Pairing it with a blazer transitions it from flirty and fun to business casual. It is a unique twist on styling this dress and is so sophisticated.

Tie-Dye For Fall

Speaking of making tie-dye more than a summer fling, this is a great way to style the trend for cooler weather. It brings in a summer vibe making things so much more fun. Tie-dye looks great in twos or even threes. They are wearing Collina Strada, the skirt is still available here.

Slip Into This

While I loved the business casual styling of this dress above, sometimes simplicity is key. Layering a turtleneck under this would be a great way to transition it into fall or even topping it with a hoodie.

Marco?

This is definitely a simple take on the tie-dye trend but one of my favorite ways to style it, so I had to share. I find myself pairing my tie-dye t-shirt with white pants frequently and will continue to do so going into the fall. Sometimes a blank canvas makes a perfect backdrop.
